4-day Sahara trek itinerary – Day-by-day
Day 1 – From Marrakech to Mhamid El Ghizlane: gateway to the desert
Departure between 7:30 and 8:00 am from your accommodation in Marrakech. The drive crosses the High Atlas via the Tizi n’Tichka Pass, then descends towards Ouarzazate for lunch. In the afternoon, you’ll continue through the scenic Draa Valley, dotted with palm groves and traditional earthen kasbahs.
At Mhamid El Ghizlane, a short 15-minute track by 4×4 takes you to the first desert bivouac. Meet your desert team, enjoy dinner under the stars and your first night in the Sahara – under canvas or in the open air.
Day 2 – The trek begins: towards Sidi Naji
The desert opens up as your caravan of camels sets off. You’ll walk for around 4 hours across stony plateaus (regs) and scattered dunes. Along the way, tamarisk trees and rocky outcrops mark the shifting landscape.
The second camp is set near the dunes of Sidi Naji, known for its fossil-rich terrain and nomadic heritage. Dinner by the fire and night under the desert sky.
Walking time: 3.5 to 4.5 hours
Day 3 – Dunes and silence at Erg Zahar
Today’s route heads south toward the majestic dunes of Erg Zahar – also known as the “Singing Dunes”. Vegetation thins out and the sand takes over. After lunch beneath a lone tamarisk, you’ll climb the dunes for a panoramic view of the Sahara.
Bivouac deep in the dunes for a truly magical night.
Walking time: 3.5 to 4.5 hours
Day 4 – Return to Mhamid and Marrakech
Breakfast among the dunes, followed by a 4×4 transfer back to Mhamid (approx. 1h30). Then return journey to Marrakech with a lunch stop along the way. Arrival late afternoon at your hotel or at the airport.
🛎️ Tip: Plan to arrive in Marrakech the day before the trek starts.
