M’hamid & Zagora
From Zagora, the River Drâa plunges into the Sahara desert. It is in this region, rich in contrasting landscapes, that you can enjoy some of the most beautiful experiences of the Moroccan desert.
A desert hub, the town of Zagora marks the transition between the relative abundance of the palm groves and the dryness of the desert. While the town itself is of little interest, its surroundings bear witness to the richness of the region’s pre-Saharan culture. You’ll find a large number of travel agencies offering hikes, treks and overnight stays in the desert.
While some treks and camel treks start in Zagora, the vast majority begin further south, in the vicinity of Tagounite, Ouled Driss or M’hamid el Ghizlane. The starting point is essentially determined by the variety of landscapes that the guide wants you to discover.
The Mecca of desert tourism in the region remains the Erg Chigaga dune massif. Relatively difficult to access, it can be reached after 50 km of tracks. This and its surface area of over 600 km2 make it an ideal place to experience a wild desert.
