Day by day itinerary of the 4×4 Atlas, M’hamid desert and Erg Chegaga tour
Day 1: Marrakech – Aït Benhaddou – Ouarzazate – Valley of the Roses
5h30 drive + 1h walk
The road leaves Marrakech at dawn to climb to the Tichka Pass, one of the highest in Morocco. On the slopes, ochre villages and terraced fields punctuate the ascent. A stop at Aït Benhaddou is a must: the ramparts of this UNESCO-listed ksar dominate a breathtaking mineral landscape. After lunch in Ouarzazate, the Valley of the Roses is revealed in the afternoon. Settle into an inn in the heart of a small village, then take a gentle stroll among the crops, orchards and rose bushes that perfume the trails.
Overnight in a hostel in the Valley of the Roses
Day 2: Rose Valley – Todra Gorge
2h drive + 2h walk
When you wake up, the light caresses the landscape. After crossing the Dades valley, we head for the Todra gorges. Here, water has carved out impressive limestone cliffs. A guided walk takes you deep into the gorge, where you can feel the freshness and striking verticality. Return to your quiet accommodation in the afternoon.
Overnight in a hostel near Boumalne Dadès
Day 3: Boumalne Dadès – Zagora – M’Hamid
5h30 drive
Early departure for M’Hamid, on the edge of the desert. Along the way, a forgotten kasbah reveals its secrets of defensive architecture. The road becomes more arid as you descend towards the Drâa. Arrival in M’Hamid in the afternoon. Settle into a fixed bivouac, deep in the dunes, far from the rest of the world. The silence of the desert comes naturally.
Night in a fixed bivouac in the M’Hamid desert
Day 4: M’Hamid – Oasis – Erg Chegaga
2h 4×4 track + 1h camel ride
Heading off in 4×4 on the Saharan tracks. A stop in an oasis or with a nomad family punctuates the morning. Then the majestic contours of Erg Chegaga come into view. At the end of the day, a short camel trek takes you to the top of the dunes for sunset. The air is pure, the sand warm, the sky immense. Dinner and overnight bivouac in tents or under the stars, with music and a shared fire.
Overnight in a fixed bivouac at the foot of the Chegaga dunes
Day 5: Erg Chegaga – Lake Iriki – Foum Zguid – Marrakech
8h drive
Last glimpses of the dunes at breakfast time. The return journey crosses Lake Iriki, often dry but always spectacular, before reaching Foum Zguid. Lunch in the village of Taznakht, the Mecca of Berber carpet weaving, then a gradual ascent to Marrakech. Return to the city at the end of the day.
Arrival in the red city at the end of the day
